WebHarriet Tubman, born Araminta Ross, was an African-American woman who helped rescue tons of slaves in the mid/late 1800’s. She was born in 1822, though the exact day is not known since records never kept that information. This information was never kept because Harriet was born a slave on a plantation in Maryland to her parents, Rit and Ben. Despite her years of service, Tubman never received a regular salary and was for years denied compensation. Her unofficial status and the unequal payments offered to black soldiers caused great difficulty in documenting her service, and the U.S. government was slow in recognizing its debt to her.
