For 2½ years, Hart and Risley visited poor and wealthy families in person each month to catalog the vocabulary spoken to children, a method that some argue might have caused poorer families to clam up while spurring wealthier families to show off their vocabularies. WebIn a classic study, Hart and Risley (1995) followed the children of 42 families of varying SES for 21⁄2 years (from ages 7– 9 months to 36 months). They observed the families at home each month for one hour. By age 3, the children from high-SES families had about twice the vocabulary as those from low-SES families.
