WebDec 27, 2024 · These rifles, while fine weapons in their own right, bear scant resemblance to the mountain rifles that came out of the Hawken brothers' St. Louis shop. It is unfortunate that T/C chose that name for this type of rifle. It is not only inaccurate, it is misleading. One final application is the least accurate of all. WebSymbolic of this movement was a half-stock heavyweight firearm, variously called the Plains Rifle" and the "Mountain Rifle," which originated in St. Louis, Missouri. The most famous makers of these rifles were two brothers, Jake and Sam Hawken. This example was made by Sam Hawken in 1849, just as the California Gold Rush began.
